Land Rover Range Rover [w/Gallery]
Wed, 15 Aug 2012The first images and details of the fourth-generation Range Rover have been released, with a notable upward shift in size and 'dynamism' for the full-fat RR.
The outgoing version brought with it a dramatic increase in size to make way for the smaller Sport and this new one grows to truly 'full-size' dimensions. The increase in length (no official figures have been released) is exaggerated by the canted-back nose, extended wheelbase and rear overhang and tapering roof line. It's certainly less upright than any previous version but we'll be interested to see if that has compromised its sense of grandeur when we see it at the Pars motor show next month.
New lamp graphics bleed around its corners at their upper points, knocking the edges off the square while clearly referencing the smaller Evoque. However the most curious change is the relocation of the side 'vents' to the door surfacce. While they alleviate some of the visual length we're keen to see if they are still functional elements.
"Designing the next generation Range Rover, following over forty years of success, came with a huge responsibility to protect the DNA of such an icon," said Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer.
"Our design team worked incredibly hard to capture the elegant proportions and pure surfaces which have been a feature of the best Range Rover designs."
Its interior appears less drastically changed, with familar strong vertical and horiziontal architecture very much in the style of the Evoque. Crucially the cabin 118mm more legroom than the outgoing model serving to give rear passengers improved comfort.
